We have a variety of different classes in order to gain access to our tools and spaces, and learn new skills. Our Safety & Orientation classes review basic safety and proper operation of each tool area, and are required for tool access regardless of previous experience. After taking these classes, students have the option to sign up for membership or become a drop-in user of the space.

We also offer theory based classes and project based classes where you learn more skills, and get hands on guidance from an instructor while completing a project. Check our out full list of classes and schedule below.

LaserLab Classes

We have a couple of classes that cover the safe operation of two different types of laser cutters.

The CO2 laser cutter is a versatile tool that can cut, etch, and engrave a wide variety of materials including wood, cardboard, paper, leather, and even acrylic.

The fibre laser engraver can engrave a variety of different metals, stone, plastics, and PVC.

In these orientations, you will learn the basics of how a laser cutter works, and how to prepare a digital design for cutting or engraving.

Ceramics Classes

Ceramics classes cover an orientation to the ceramics studio, and basic hand building or wheel throwing techniques. Due to the nature of clay, these classes are multiple weeks long.

CNC Router 101

Learn the basics of our CNC router. This robotic cutting tool can create parts with complex curves and surfaces out of wood, plastic, soft metal (including aluminum), foam, and other composites. This orientation will present the whole CNC process, from CAD (computer aided design) to CAM (computer aided machining) to CUT (cutting your part), and each student will get hands-on experience operating the CNC router.

MetalLab Classes

These courses are geared towards those who want to get familiar with working with metal. MIG Welding & Metal Fabrication 101 covers the cutting and shaping tools most commonly used and is a basic introduction to the shop.

Machining Classes

These courses are geared to those that want to get familiar with more advanced metal machining.

The CNC Metal Machining class introduces students to the Tormach PCNC 1100 S3.

The Metal Lathe class introduces students to the Hercus 260 Metal Lathe.

Both of these tools allow their users to create high precision parts.

Electronics Lab Classes

3D Printing & Design Classes

Learn all about 3D printing and design. Make your own computer generated 3D models that you can then 3D print or CNC. 3D Printing 101 covers our FDM printer, and 3D Printing 102 covers the SLA printer.

Textile Lab Classes

Learn how to sew in our TextileLab classes. Courses are designed for those with no prior sewing experience and for the experienced sewer. Start with the basics on our domestic sewing machines, or learn how to use a serger and industrial straight stitch machines.

CNC Embroidery 101

In this class you will learn how to set-up custom embroidery files using Inkstitch which can then be used on the CNC Embroidery machine. This class has a heavy focus on learning the software and file set-up. Prior knowledge of Inkscape is required in order to take this class. You will then learn how to operate the CNC Embroidery machine using both your custom files and pre-programmed patterns.

THEORY BASED WORKSHOPS

WoodLab Consults

Consults are for those that have taken the WoodLab 101 class or other WoodLab classes at MakerLabs and would like to get assistance in making your project ideas a reality.

If you have a woodworking project idea in mind, but aren't sure how to build it, book a consult and get advice and some hands-on assistance in building a project.

Please note, consults are for people to get help and advice while working on their projects under supervision, and is not meant for the instructor to build the project for you.

SketchUp for Woodworkers

The SketchUp Furniture Design class is a hands-on course for all skill levels, teaching how to use SketchUp for custom furniture designs.

Participants will learn the basics of SketchUp, engage in practical exercises, and tackle real-world projects.

Led by a professional instructor, the course covers everything from basic modeling to advanced features.

By the end of the class, students will be proficient in using SketchUp to design furniture and communicate their ideas effectively.

Tool Sharpening 101

This class covers the safe operation of our slow speed grinder, whet stone, and hand tools to sharpen lathe tools, chisels, cabinet scrapers, and hand plane blades. Members and drop-in members must take this orientation before using any of our sharpening tools.

During the class, students will sharpen a cabinet scraper, and make their own whetstone. Students will take home a cabinet scraper and a DIY whetstone after the class.

WoodLab 201

WoodLab 201 covers the principles of basic woodworking techniques and the knowledge needed to build something properly to last.

This is primarily a theory based class with some instruction taking place in the WoodLab.

Students are encouraged to bring woodworking project ideas as the last part of the class will be reserved for getting help and advice from the instructor on specific projects they would like to complete.

PROJECT BASED WORKSHOPS

Kumiko Box Workshop

In this class, students will learn the traditional Japanese woodworking technique of kumiko to create a stunning and intricate box that is 4" x 4" x 3". Using the tools in the WoodLab, students will learn how to build a box out of hardwood, and learn how to craft delicate lattice patterns using thin strips of wood that will be assembled together to form a design on the lid.

Throughout the class, students will work with the table saw, table router, and hand tools to make their project. Finish will be applied to the box to make it smooth. By the end of the class, students will have a beautiful handmade kumiko box to take home and showcase their newfound woodworking skills.

This a a three week long class, taking place once a week for three weeks

Honeycombination: How to Bee a Woodworker

Learn basics of woodworking in our hands-on project based class. We'll guide you step-by-step to build your own wooden hexagon box with a lid.

You'll combine reclaimed wood to build a lid both beautiful and eco-friendly. In this woodworking class, you'll get to use real tools like table saw sleds, a miter saw, and an orbital sander. We'll teach you how to safely operate each one. Perfect for beginners or those looking to sharpen their skills. No experience needed, just bring your enthusiasm!

Crafting with Cricut

Join us for an exciting introductory Cricut workshop where we will delve into the world of precision cutting and explore the versatility of vinyl and cardstock with Cricut machines. From intricate designs to personalized decals, this workshop offers hands-on experience to unleash your imagination. 

Participants will navigate through the necessary basics of Cricut Design Space and learn essential techniques for cutting, weeding, and applying vinyl, while also mastering the art of intricate cardstock creations. 

This workshop is geared towards beginners with Cricut and anyone interested to learn. You do not need to own a Cricut to participate and all necessary materials are included. At the end you will walk away with two customized projects - a Stencil-cut bookmark cut out of cardstock, and a vinyl design transferred onto a clear acrylic keychain.

Ceramics Social

Are you looking for a creative way to unwind after work? Spend some time nurturing your artistic side!

Join our drop-in pottery class and discover the joy of working with clay, take a break from your busy day, and tap into your creative side. Come alone or bring your coworkers along for an after work adventure that will provide a quick escape from the stresses of the day.

This class is a bit of a taster of what can be done in MakerLabs’ Ceramics Lab, and is open to all levels of experience. If you’ve wanted to try wheel throwing or hand building, get a quick intro with the guidance of an instructor and make a piece of pottery. Students can drop-in anytime between 6:30pm to 8:30pm to work on their creations.

Students wishing to return to the ceramics studio to work independently must first take MakerLabs’ Ceramics 101 or 102 class.

Includes 3.5lbs of clay. Additional materials can be purchased for a fee.

Projects will be fired and ready for pick-up within one month of completion.

Ceramics Night: Sushi Set Workshop

Looking for a fun night out? In this class, students will make a sushi set including a plate, soy sauce dish, and chopsticks holder out of clay while enjoying some wine.

This is a fun class that makes a great date night or night out while enjoying a creative activity.

Students will learn some basics about handbuilding with clay, build their sushi set, and then paint it with underglaze.

After the class, staff will fire the work, and students will be notified via email when their work is ready to pick-up. We aim to have everything ready to pick-up within a month of taking the class.

Cutting Board Workshop

In this beginner woodworking class students will build a cutting board that is 10" x 14", made out maple and walnut. Participants will learn some basic woodworking skills and walk away with a simple and attractive cutting board that is ready to use at home. At the end of the workshop, students can laser engrave a small design on their board.

Playing with Alcohol Inks Paint Night

Take your creativity to the next level with a class painting with alcohol inks with friends, on a date night, or as a fun night out for yourself!

This fun and interactive class is perfect for all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned artists. No prior painting experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided for you.

Paint Pouring Night

Create beautiful, one-of-a-kind art pieces using the popular technique of paint pouring. Our experienced instructor will guide you through the process, providing tips and tricks to help you achieve stunning results.

This class is perfect for couples looking for a unique and memorable date night activity or for groups of friends looking to unwind and have some fun.

All materials are provided, including canvases, paints, and pouring supplies. No experience is necessary, and our instructor will be there every step of the way to ensure that you feel confident and successful in your creation.

Please wear clothes you don't mind getting paint on.

Policies

Cancellation Policy

Refunds, credits for future classes and orientations, or transferring a ticket to a future date, will only be provided if we are notified by email to hello@makerlabs.com at least 24 hours in advance of the class. For cancellation less than 24 hours before the class, we do not provide a refund, but we do offer a 50% credit towards a future class or orientation. No refunds or credits will be provided for no shows. If transferring a ticket to a future class date, students may only transfer their ticket once before forfeiting their original ticket, even if providing more than 24 hours notice.

We ask that all students arrive 15 minutes before the schedule start of the class so that it can start on time. Attendees arriving more than 5 minutes late will not be allowed in the class.

Want to run a workshop at MakerLabs?

We do a 50/50 split of profits between members and MakerLabs for any classes that members run using our tools and spaces. MakerLabs will handle all the promotion and administration of the class as well.
