Garage Sale

Dear Members we are spring cleaning in March and hosting a garage sale to get rid of our unused items. Here is the plan: 

Now until March 13 - please remove any personal items from the common areas

March 14 - remaining items in the common areas will be tagged for the garage sale

March 24 - all tagged items will be moved to the loading bay area for our sale

March 25 - garage sale! Members are welcome to bring their items for sale but must be willing to help with the sale and the post-sale clean up. 

March 27 - post garage sale clean-up, remaining items to be sorted for recycling and disposal

The first annual Makerspaces of Cascadia Unconference will bring together the makerspaces, hackerspaces, fablabs, and tool libraries of the Pacific Northwest region. This weekend event will feature a welcome party, lightning talks, open houses, participant-led discussions, and more!

Introduction to Jacquard Weaving (1/2)

Take advantage of this rare opportunity to use a Jacquard loom under the guidance of experienced weavers. Workshops with 4-6 people will be held at (TAD) the Textile Arts Department and Studio located on the second floor of MakerLabs at 780 East Cordova St, Vancouver. 

In this course you will learn how to create Jacquard weavings from your original drawings, images or designs using Photoshop. Please bring several images on a USB Drive to your first class. (We will send you detailed information before the class begins.)

You will create a file using simple weave structures in black and white or black with one colour. Weaving will be done on a computerized AVL Jacq3G Jacquard loom for a small piece (24” wide x 12-16” high. (60 cm x 40 cm) 720 x 360 pixels. The workshop consists of two 5 hour sessions, then we will schedule each person with weaving time outside of this class time.

Requirements:  

Image manipulation and proficiency with Photoshop is required and you should have your own laptop with some version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. A weaving background is helpful but not required and projects can be adapted to focus more on the design process or weaving. People will weave their own pieces outside of class time or can have them woven by a technician.

Costs: $200 (This cost includes materials)

This intro to stained glass class is an intensive one day class. Class is 5.5 hours with a 30 minute break in the middle.

April 2nd from 12:30pm to 6:00pm

In this course you will learn how to make a simple sun catcher using the copper foil method. You will learn how to cut glass, use a glass grinder, and use a soldering iron.

At the end of the course you will have a completed sun catcher that is 6" tall.

It is recommended that you bring a bottle of water and to tie your hair back if you have long hair.

Silver Ring Workshop

Date: Mar. 19th, Sunday

Time: 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Place: MakerLabs, 780 East Cordova St.

In this 3-hour basic wax carving workshop, we will take you through each step of the process - from an introduction to the tools, ring design, sizing and wax carving. We will provide instruction and share tips, but our night has no strict lesson plan. We would like you to enjoy yourselves and create your dream jewellery.

Previous experience in jewellery is not required, nor is any sculpting or drawing skill. The wax carving process uses basic tools, which makes it easy for everyone to design and carve a unique and personalized ring.

Step 1. Big block of wax!

Step 2. Carve block into base form of ring.

Step 3. Engrave wax with details. Done!

We will cast in sterling silver, then file and polish to make the finished product!

Step 4. Pick up the ring in 2 weeks. Same place; same time. Easy!

  • No experience necessary + all supplies included.
  • Wax ring size is range from 5-14.
  • Wax width 5mm.
  • Extra $30 for wider width 8mm.
